ABOUT MILLENNIUM VOLUNTEERS
Queen Mary's Sidcup NHS Trust has been awarded sponsorship from the Department of Education and
Employment to run the Millennium Volunteers. A new nation-wide initiative to encourage 16-24 year olds to volunteer their time for the benefit of others. During this three-year project the government is keen to promote active citizenship, with young people in the community.
Queen Mary's Sidcup NHS Trust is keen to encourage young people to be active in voluntary roles in all areas of the hospital and projects in the local community.
The project was managed by Simon Platt from Community Service Volunteers(CSV). Who in
partnership with the hospital and local agencies, will develop active, varied and interesting roles for young people to get involved in.
Millennium Volunteers want to encourage young people to play an active role in developing their own ideas, and projects. Promoting the slogan:
BUILD ON WHAT YOU'RE INTO

We have identified a number of areas and opportunities that may be of interest to young people.Including the planning and building of environmental projects around the hospital, art and drama exhibitions, befriending and assisting patients in the wards and being involved in all aspects of hospital life. We hope to work in partnership with schools and youth organisations to develop a fresh approach to encouraging young peole to be active citizens in their community.

The aim of the project is to encourage young people to make a long-term commitment. Millennium
Volunteer Award Certificates will be awarded, for 1OO and 2OO hours active involvement. These
awards are recognised by employers and colleges,It is also hoped that working with other agencies, young people will
have the opportunity to access formal accreditation for their learning on Millennium Volunteers.

* All volunteers will be interviewed by the project to assess their strengths, and to gain
an insight into their expectations. We feel that it is important that the young people's views
and
ideas play a part in the success of the project.
* All volunteers working at Queen Mary's Sidcup NHS Trust will have an Induction, and Hospital
run Health & Safety Course.
* Placement profiles will be provided to ensure that the volunteers have a clear understanding of
what their project involves.
* Regular reviews of all volunteers and placements will take place to ensure the smooth running
and success of the projects.
* All participants will be asked to sign a volunteer plan showing their commitment to the
project.

We believe that participating in this project will help young peole to develop their life skills.
Improving their communication skills, confidence and encouraging them to take responsibility for
their own actions and involvement.

This project is aimed at changing the attitudes of people to volunteering. To show young people
that being involve in their community is something to be proud of. It is about proving that they have a role to
play, and that they can have a beneficial effect on the community they live in, whilst gain from
the experience for thier future.
most of all it's about enjoying your time with MV.
